Title: Temp – Leadership – Director of Nursing (DON), Long-Term Care (LTC) (Days) Sault St. Marie, MI
Description: The director is responsible to lead the clinical operations of the LTC Department. Along with LTC
Administrator, is responsible for the development and implementation of policy, procedures, budget, quality
reviews, and a continuing process for customer service improvements; responsible for the oversight of
human and financial resources while integrating the standards of professional nursing practice. The DON is
a professional registered nurse responsible for the day-to-day resident care activities of the LTC unit. The
DON serves as a leader and clinical resource in promoting and interpreting the philosophy, goals and
objectives of Nursing Administration. The DON effectively utilizes all aspects of the nursing process in
managing the care of residents through the aging process. Assists with planning and implementation of
clinical resident care and identifies clinical resources necessary to maintain standards of care. Maintains
proper staffing levels based on the established staffing guidelines. Will lead and be actively involved in
hospitals Nurse Aide education program to supply organization with certified nursing assistants.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(25%)* Administrative. In conjunction with the V.P. of Nursing (VPN) and System V.P., develops and
recommends goals and objectives for LTC in accordance with hospital
goals and objectives. Implements approved departmental goals and objectives and monitors progress
toward goal and objective achievement. Works with staff and
physicians to determine, develop, recommend, and implement departmental policies and procedures which
are in accordance with hospital goals and objectives. Enforces
departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Implements federal, state, and local regulations
pertaining to department i.e., DNV/Joint Commission, MDPH, CLIA.
(25%)* Human Resources. In conjunction with the VPN and System V.P., determines organization of
department and staffing requirements. Selects, trains, supervises,
develops, appraises performance, initiates and recommends salary changes, promotions, discharge, and
all other personnel actions. Establishes work schedules and assignments.
Creates an environment supportive of Hospital Values. Highly visible in the departments and communicates
frequently with all shifts.
(25%)* Financial. Coordinates the development and preparation of departmental operating and capital
budgets. Monitors adherence to budgets, and when necessary
determines reason for variance and develops plan to resolve the variance. Regularly reports on budgetary performance to the VPN and System V.P.
(25%)* Clinical Operations. Manages day to day operation of LTC Unit. Authorizes the department’s supply
and purchasing activities. Recommends and secures approval for
purchase of supplies and capital equipment. Communicates policies and procedures, job problems, and
employee concerns with employees and encourages the development of
behaviors for improved performance of employees. Acts as a liaison with other Hospital departments and
staff. Has monthly staff meetings, to include all shifts.
