JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB SUMMARY: We are seeking a Senior Outpatient Surgery Coder to join our team. This role is responsible for the accurate and timely assignment of CPT, ICD-10-CM, and applicable modifiers for a variety of outpatient surgical procedures, ensuring compliance with official coding guidelines, payer requirements, and organizational policies. The Senior OP Surgery Coder possesses the ability to code complex cases and contributes to quality initiatives, audits, and process improvements. The ideal candidate demonstrates knowledge of surgical anatomy, operative reports, and specialty-specific procedures, along with strong critical-thinking skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while meeting productivity and quality standards. This role plays a key part in supporting revenue integrity, coding accuracy, and collaboration across audit and revenue cycle teams.

JOB DUTIES:
• Serves as a clinical coding subject matter expert and utilizes critical thinking to analyze and evaluate moderate to complex outpatient documentation for the accurate assignment of ICD-10 CM and CPT-4 codes.
• Identifies and assigns ICD-10 CM diagnosis codes, CPT-4 procedure codes and appropriate modifiers to ER E/M assignment & charging, OP Trauma, Infusion coding/charging, all Hospital and ASC Surgeries, Observation, Interventional Radiology (IR) & Cardiology and Claim Edits for the purpose of hospital reimbursement, research, and compliance with federal and state regulations.
• Monitors assigned work daily to facilitate the billing process within the established timeframes. Codes and abstracts records within timeframes established for each patient type.
o Maintains coding quality accuracy rate of ***%.
o Maintains productivity rate of at least 95%.
• Communicates with various departments within the hospitals regarding billing and registration issues. Refers any problems to management timely, providing clear details.
• Complies with AHIMA standards of ethical coding and coding compliance guidelines.
• Demonstrates support and compliance with University of Maryland Medical System mission, vision, values statement, goals and objectives and policies. Performs other duties or projects such as coding corrections as assigned by the manager.
• May provide support to PB Outpatient Coding Specialists and/or act as backup, as necessary.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
* Must have one of the following: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder (CIRCC).
* High school diploma or equivalent.
* Formal ICD-10 CM, and CPT-4 training is required.
* 3 or more years of outpatient coding experience in a facility healthcare setting which must include Outpatient Surgical coding.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:
• Ability to utilize coding and EHR software (e.g., EPIC, 3M HDM) efficiently to perform coding duties.
• Knowledge and good understanding of NCCI edits, NCD & LCD requirements, and payer guidelines.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and attention to detail skills.
• Ability to prioritize workload, meet deadlines, and work effectively under pressure.
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Knowledge of general office procedures and filing systems.
• Strong problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work under minimal supervision.
